    Right-hander Armando Galarraga was designated for assignment on Friday by the Texas Rangers to open a roster spot for pitcher Jason Jennings. Galarraga, who came from Washington in the December 2005 trade that sent Alfonso Soriano to the Nationals, made his major league debut with Texas late last season.

    Rangers 1B Chris Shelton sent to minors after clearing waivers (AP)

    The Texas Rangers sent first baseman Chris Shelton outright to Triple-A Oklahoma on Thursday after he cleared waivers. Shelton, a non-roster invitee to spring training, was designated for assignment Jan. 14 to make room on the roster for right-hander Kazuo Fukumori. Shelton was acquired last month from Detroit for outfielder Freddy Guzman.

    Ryan Howard asked the Philadelphia Phillies for a $10 million contract in salary arbitration, and Los Angeles Angels closer Francisco Rodriguez requested $12.5 million when players and teams swapped figures.
