Even before a formal announcement, baseball general managers were expecting the Boston Red Sox to be the winner of the bidding for Japanese pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka. The Seibu Lions scheduled a news conference in Japan at the same time Major League Baseball planned an announcement Tuesday night at the annual general managers’ meetings.

Rangers coach going back to minors (AP)
Rangers first-base coach and outfield instructor Bobby Jones is going back to the minor leagues as a manager instead of remaining on the staff for new manager Ron Washington. There was no corresponding announcement Thursday from Texas about who would be the new first-base coach. Jones will manage the organization’s Triple-A Oklahoma RedHawks in 2007.

Rangers hire Howe as bench coach (AP)
Art Howe has been hired as bench coach for the Texas Rangers and first-time manager Ron Washington. Howe’s hiring was confirmed by two baseball officials with knowledge of the decision. The Rangers were unable to announce the move Wednesday because the necessary paperwork had not been finalized with the commissioner’s office.
